Jonkershoek sits in a deep valley closed in by the mountains on three sides, which makes for a very particular kind of light — long morning shadow while the sun clears the ridge, then hard, direct glare for the rest of the day once it does. Homesteads range from working farmhouses with additions bolted on over the decades to newer luxury builds that lean into the view with a genuine wall of glass. Wind funnels down the valley here more than it does in town, especially through the colder months.
The hardest west-facing glass usually calls for motorised external venetians or roller shutters, stopping the afternoon heat before it reaches the room. Older homestead sections with proper sash windows suit warm timber venetians, while new glazed extensions are better served by motorised roller blinds run off one control.
Outdoor entertaining areas need the wind factored in from the start — a folding-arm awning or zip screen out here is fitted with a wind sensor as standard, not an optional extra, given how quickly the valley can turn gusty.
Several Jonkershoek properties are working farms, so we're glad to work around a harvest or picking schedule rather than insisting on our own timing. A free in-home measure still comes first — the valley's light and wind are specific enough that nothing here gets guessed from a brochure.
